Daniel Gordon Adams is a genre-defiant musical creative, researcher and educator based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. His works fuse diverse musical styles and audiovisual components in pursuit of the goal of vivid, visceral storytelling.
My recent work, Urbia, rejoices in the complicated nexus between a diverse collection of textures and sounds. The musical impact of its exploration is coupled with an impactful message of spatial justice – the city, after all, exists as a reflection of, and a testament to, our shared vision as a citizenry. The civic contract should afford a place at its table for the many, rather than for the few, and Urbia mindfully harnesses and represents the musical languages of the many. In my other recent work, Crawford on the Hill by the Sea, I centred the spoken word reminiscences of former inmates and employees of Mount Crawford Prison in Miramar to advocate for criminal justice reform and for meaningful access to The Arts for our incarcerated fellow citizens.
I have been commissioned by the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts as composer, lyricist and performer of touring musical theatre work Geographical Cure, with my band Verona, actors and animation. Prior to that I composed and performed critically acclaimed albums and music theatre shows Storm and This Love Will Undo Us All, exploring the words of Shakespeare in classical-rock fusions and acoustic musical settings. I have appeared as composer-performer for the Wellington International Jazz Festival, the Wellington Fringe Festival, the Hamilton Fuel Festival and the Tauranga Arts Festival.
